Positive Pathways Behavior helps children struggling with behavior or social interactions in school, at home, or in other environments. Through personalized behavior coaching, John Thoms works one-on-one with children and caregivers to build positive habits, set behavior goals, and improve daily success.

The Positive Pathways Behavior Method is built on a direct but deeply humane premise: behavior must be taught. Behavior is not treated as something children automatically know how to manage simply because adults expect it. It is treated as a developmental skill set that must be modeled, practiced, corrected, repeated, reflected on, and applied in real situations.

This approach rejects two common extremes. On one side is punishment-based control, where adults respond to behavioral struggles mainly through shame, threats, removal, lectures, or consequences. On the other side is over-accommodation, where adults remove challenge, erase responsibility, or allow emotional escalation to control the environment. This method operates in the harder middle ground: relationship and accountability at the same time.

The work is not permissive, and it is not authoritarian. It is not built around humiliation, coercion, degradation, embarrassment, or punishment-based control. It is also not built around letting children avoid every hard thing, allowing diagnosis as excuses, protecting children from emotional stress.

The goal is to help children develop enough internal strength, emotional regulation, problem-solving ability, and practical resilience to function successfully in the real world while maintaining dignity and identity.

This method overlaps with several research-based and best-practice frameworks, though it is not identical to any single model. Relevant areas include collaborative problem-solving, functional behavior assessment, executive functioning, Positive Behavior & Intervention Supports, restorative practices, self-regulation development, trauma-informed practice, attachment-informed approaches, experiential education, mentoring-based development, growth mindset, self-efficacy, and resilience research.

The common thread across these fields is that children develop stronger long-term behavioral capacity when adults understand function, preserve relationship, maintain appropriate expectations, teach replacement skills, and provide repeated opportunities for practice and recovery.

This method is the integration of these ideas into practical, real-world settings: schools, mentoring, camps, ranch work, group experiences, academic support, and direct behavior coaching.

About
Positive Pathways

How one behaves reflects their behavior skills—all children do their best with their skill set. Behavior must be taught, just like reading or math. I teach behavior skills. Behaviors aren’t “bad”— they are appropriate or inappropriate, depending on the timing and context. Both teaching and learning behavior skills can be extremely challenging. Learning how to behave situationally appropriate in various situations is as complex as mastering any academic subject. I specialize in helping children learn situationally appropriate behaviors, while also equipping adults with preventative, proactive, and effective strategies for responding to behaviors.
